They would stop the moment he appeared in the club room and start up again as soon as he was out of earshot - and sometimes before that.

"Is Hiyoshi really supposed to be the captain of Hyoutei next year?"

"What is the Hyoutei tennis club coming to?"

"Sakaki must be losing his touch."

"What are we going to do once Atobe and the other seniors graduate?"

After hearing so many whispers, most people would start to believe them. Hiyoshi Wakashi was different, though. He continued to strive to be better, brighter, faster.

But how does a small star among many outshine the sun?



They pounded in his ears, deafening him with their harshness, grating against his nerves, leaving him raw and bleeding.

"Did you know that Ohtori is the reason why Shishido got back on the regulars?"

"Shishido and Ohtori's doubles get better every day."

"Ohtori and Shishido have been getting awfully close, haven't they?"

"Where did Shishido and Ohtori run off to?"

Whispers like those could be very disheartening to someone, could affect the way that they play. It could make them weak, bring out their worst qualities. Instead, all it did was drive Hiyoshi back to the tennis courts, back to the dojo. It increased his determination to show the world just who he was and what he was capable of.

He'd give them all something worth whispering about.
